Editor's Notes
The Apex Bionic is The North Face's answer to the soft-shell category: a stretchy, wind-blocking jacket with a DWR finish that sheds light drizzle while letting moisture escape during high-output activity. The fabric has enough structure to layer over a tee or base layer without feeling bulky, and the fit allows full range of motion for scrambling, hiking, or commuting by bike.
This works best as a three-season outer layer or a winter midlayer under a hardshell. It's popular with climbers, trail runners, and anyone who runs warm and needs airflow more than insulation. The jacket resists wind better than fleece but breathes better than a rain shell, which makes it ideal for stop-and-go activity in cool, dry conditions.
The tradeoff: it's not waterproof, so sustained rain will eventually soak through. If you live somewhere with frequent downpours, you'll still need a dedicated rain layer. But for windy ridgelines, brisk spring mornings, or fall hikes where you're generating heat, the Apex Bionic earns its reputation as a versatile workhorse.
