Editor's Notes
The Moab 3 is Merrell's updated take on their long-running trail workhorse, a low-cut hiking shoe that handles everything from groomed nature trails to rocky scrambles. It pairs a supportive midsole with a Vibram outsole that grips across mixed surfaces, while the suede and mesh upper keeps weight reasonable without sacrificing structure. The fit runs true to size with a roomy toe box that works well for wider feet or those who prefer extra wiggle room on descents.
This shoe earns its place in a rotation for hikers who want more ankle mobility than a boot offers but still need genuine trail protection. It handles full-day outings with a pack, though it's not designed for multi-day backpacking loads or technical alpine routes. The breathable upper is a win in warm conditions but less ideal in sustained wet weather, where a waterproof version might serve better.
The tradeoff here is durability versus weight. At around 2 pounds per pair, it's lighter than traditional boots but heavier than minimalist trail runners, and the construction reflects that middle ground. Expect solid performance across a few seasons of regular use rather than the extended lifespan of a heavier boot.
